About Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a small British overseas territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by mainland Spain. Strategically placed at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar was captured by Anglo-Dutch forces from Spain in 1704 and became an important navy base during World War II. Today, this 6.7 kilometre-squared region attracts a great number of visitors each year, with its main draws being the enormous ‘Rock’, pleasant climate and fascinating mix of English and Spanish culture. This is particularly evident when macaque monkeys scamper past red pillar boxes and classic British pubs, so have your camera at the ready. The 5 kilometre-long limestone ridge is Gibraltar’s most famous attraction, reaching 426 metres high, offering sublime panoramic views of the peninsula, the African coastline and the Costa del Sol. The gateway to Gibraltar is the large Moroccan port city of Tangier Med, with weekly sailings across the Strait of Gibraltar, usually lasting around 90 minutes.
