St Helier is the capital of the island of Jersey which is the largest of the Channel Islands which are situated in the English Channel. Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom and has a separate relationship to the British Crown from the other Crown Dependencies of Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Jersey has its own international identity from the UK, although the UK is constitutionally responsible for the island's defence.
A popular attraction in St Helier is the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery which tells the story of Jersey from Neolithic times through to the present day. There are many artefacts on display including priceless Bronze Age gold torque and Millais' famous portrait of Lillie Langtry. Jersey's port can be found on the south coast of the island, in St Helier, on St Aubin's Bay. Ferry services available from the port depart to St Malo in France, Portsmouth, Poole and Weymouth in England, and also to the neighbouring island of Guernsey. Sark is a small island that is located close to the islands of Guernsey and Jersey and lies in the English Channel. It is one of the Channel Islands and has around 700 residents and is quite unusual in that the entire island is car-free. The only methods of transport allowed on the island are bicycles, horse drawn carriages and tractors. There are two main areas of the island and they are known as Greater Sark and Little Sark, and are connected to each other by a small strip of land known as the Coupee. The island, which is only 5 km long, is governed by the Seigneur and is the smallest European State in existence. Popular attractions on the island include its spectacular coastline and secluded beaches such as Grande Greve Bay. There are also the fantastic grounds that surround the Seigneur's official residence - the 17th century La Seigneurie.
The Isle of Sark Shipping Company operates small ferries from Sark to St Peter Port in Guernsey. The crossing takes 45 minutes for the 14 km journey. A high-speed passenger ferry also operates in the summer to Jersey. Also a 12-passenger boat, the Lady Maris II, operates regular services to Alderney.
