Rovinj Guide

The Croatian city of Rovinj lies on the Adriatic Sea coast, on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsular. The city is a thriving fishing port and is also a popular tourist destination. The city's Old Town, which used to be an island secured by medieval walls, has seven gates, of which three still remain today. Artefacts have been found that date back to the Bronze Age although the city didn't really begin to grow until the 3rd century. The city is characterised by narrow houses, narrow streets and a small square which is a reflection of the limited space available in the city on which to build. Interesting attractions in the city's Old Town include the striking Church of St Euphemia and the Balbi Arch, which both have more than a hint of Venice about them.

Located near to the city centre, the port offers passenger ferry services to Venice in Italy with a crossing time of around 3 hours and 30 minutes when the crossing stops en route in Porec, Pula or Piran. Direct crossings to the Italian city take around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Facilities in the port include restaurants and some shops.

Venice Guide

The Italian city of Venice was founded more than 1,500 years ago and actually lies on 118 different islands that are connected by a series of over 150 canals and 400 bridges. This beautiful city's historic centre is divided into six quarters which are Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo and Santa Croce. All of Venice's buildings are supported by either Oak or Pine posts that have been driven deep into the ground in order to provide a solid foundation for the buildings they support.

Venice is arguably one of the most visited, and most beautiful, cities in the world and has many popular attractions including the Basilica San Marco which is a large church and perhaps one of the most famous sights in the city. Also in the city is the Piazza San Marco, in the heart of the city, the Palazzo Ducale which is a stunning waterside palace, and the Accademia Gallery that contains masterpieces from the 14th century through to the 18th century by some of the world's greatest artists including Bellini, Longhi, Picasso, Titian and Rosalba Carriera.
