About Sicily

Sicily can be found to the south of Italy and is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, separated from the mainland by the narrow Strait of Messina. Situated at the meeting point between East and West, Africa and Europe, Sicily is truly at the crossroads of Mediterranean culture and offers much to see, to taste, and to do. With a varied landscape of glistening seas and restless mountains, the scenery creates a dramatic and lasting impression on those who visit. With a host of natural wonders and long warm seasons, Sicily is an attractive year round destination for explorers and holidaymakers alike. Sicily is a hub for ferry connections with ferry services operated by some of Europe’s biggest ferry companies travelling to and from most of the surrounding islands, ports on the mainland, Malta and North Africa via Tunisia.

About Pelagie Islands

The Pelagie islands of Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione are located south of Sicily in the southernmost tip of Italy, closer to Africa than the mainland itself. The islands owe their name to the Greek word pelagos which means ‘deep sea’. The islands lie on the very edge of the continental shelf separating Africa from Europe, and while Linosa is balanced on the European shelf, the last peak in Etna’s volcanic chain, Lampedusa lies on the African shelf, and is known as 'a gift from Africa to Europe'. The tiny Lampione to the west of the group is little more than a desert rock and doesn't have a ferry connection. Linosa at the top of the group and closest to the mainland has a population of around 450 and is increasingly popular with day trippers. Lampedusa is the largest and main island of the Pelagies and is particularly busy during the summer season.
